Bamboo

Bamboos have become extremely popular garden plants over the past decade or so and we have a wide and varied selection of some of the best plants available to add the touch of the exotic to your outdoor space. Bamboo has many functions within the garden and several growing habits too, which makes it suitable for all sizes of garden and container growing.

How to grow

Bamboo is easy to grow and by following a few simple instructions the bamboo you purchase will get off to a great start. If you cannot plant immediately after delivery you should ensure that plants are watered well and place them in a cool and bright spot until you can place them in to their final positions.

Position

Bamboos enjoy to be planted in full sun and will benefit from having a degree of shelter to protect from cold winds and inclement weather. It is important to consider the final size and growing habit of your chosen plant and consider its surroundings.

Soil

Bamboo is best planted in to a soil that is free draining and with an open structure. This helps to provide the plant with conditions that keep it relatively moist but free from wet soil, which can inhibit growth. This also allows air to circulate which is beneficial to growth and reduces the risk of disease. You can improve your soil by adding well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost and incorporating horticultural sand or grit.

Care

Bamboo, in general, are fairly low maintenance garden plants. They are, however, very heavy feeders and will benefit from an application of well-rotted manure, pelleted chicken manure or general fertilizer . Water plants regularly or grow using Water Beads and check for pests and diseases.

Top Tip

Bamboos can be used to create an alternative hedge, windbreak or screen.

Bamboo

Arrow BambooArrow BambooTall, vigorous bamboo with olive canes maturing to pale beige and dark green oblong leaves. Arrow bamboo is one of the most wind and shade tolerant varieties. Broadly upright in habit, as long as the roots are surrounded with a non-perishable barrier it makes an attractive screen or windbreak for moist, well-drained areas of the garden.
Bambusa BambooBambusa BambooClumping bamboos, although spread is quite fast. Slender to quite large stem diameters with a corresponding range in mature height. Suitable for the home or a greenhouse. Grow this plant in a large container. If leaves are yellowing, you're over-watering also avoid drafts. Re-pot every two years.
Black BambooBlack BambooOne of the most elegant bamboos, with polished, damson-black mature canes and dark green leaves. The slender, arching canes, which are dark green for the first two or three years, look perfect in a contemporary, minimalist garden particularly if the low-growing foliage is stripped. Although this is not one of the more vigorous and invasive bamboos, it is advisable to restrict the roots using a rigid, non-perishable barrier to prevent the plant from colonizing adjacent plantings.
Broad Leaved BambooBroad Leaved BambooA vigorous medium-sized bamboo with green canes and mid-green leaves. This robust bamboo is best used as ground cover and for clipping into low molds. It should only be introduced if you are prepared to keep it under control, since it can be extremely invasive and hard to eradicate once established.
Blue BambooBlue BambooA hardier, bluer variety that was found growing at altitudes above 8400ft in the Himalayas. They emerge each year in early summer in shades of green and slowly become bluer over a period of a couple of years. They finally fade after a couple of years to a greeny-yellow with hints of purple. It has delicate looking foliage and a very upright habit so is great for adding vertical interest. As it is a clump forming variety it is not invasive, but it will spread to around 3m across. It looks stunning planted up in a large pot (just make sure you keep it well watered) or planted using Water Beads.
Buddha's Belly BambooBuddha's Belly BambooCulms curiously enlarged between the nodes (Buddha's belly appearance), about 10 to 12 feet (3-4m) tall in containers. Much bigger and losing the belly with a bigger root run. Does best in full sunlight coming from the South/East/West.
Golden Groove BambooGolden Groove BambooA tall, colored-stemmed bamboo with rich yellow canes with a few green stripes at the base. This green leaved bamboo looks spectacular grown as a specimen. One of our highly recommended plants, it should be planted next to a building or path where the near-luminous, yellow to burnt orange colored canes can be enjoyed all year.
Fargesia BambooFargesia BambooSmall to medium clumping bamboos with four or more branches at each node. Suitable only for a greenhouse due to extra care required. Division in the late spring. After dividing plant, pot in the plant's regular potting mix. Provide good ventilation, avoid direct sunlight and keep cool.
Lucky BambooLucky BambooLeaves a glossy green with silvery-white stripes. Suitable for the home or a greenhouse & will grow for anybody. Feed every two weeks with a water soluble fertilizer. For older plants it is recommended that you increase their fertilizing to weekly. Mist frequently with warm water (lime free to avoid leaf staining) and remove all dead leaves. Leaf tips will go brown if the plant is under watered but this browning may be carefully trimmed. The plants sold as ""Lucky Bamboo"" are usually growing in water and will be successful for atime, but may eventually need to be repotted in soil.
Miniature BambooMiniature BambooLeaves green or yellow-green variegated. Small enough that it is not clear whether they are runners or clumpers. Division at anytime. After dividing plant, pot in the plant's regular potting mix.
Phyllostachys BambooPhyllostachys BambooA spectacular large bamboo with rich yellow canes and mid-green leaves. The canes have unusual green markings giving the appearance that they have been randomly painted by a mischievous child. To guarantee success grow in a site protected from high winds, where the colorful canes can be seen throughout the year.
Pleioblastus BambooPleioblastus BambooDwarf to medium size bamboos. Suitable only for a greenhouse & requires a little extra care. Stem cuttings with a node and division in the spring. It is best to propagate any type of cuttings in a mixture of moist peat and perlite. Cover the pot and plant with a plastic bag secured by a rubber band to prevent the moisture from escaping. Place in indirect sunlight or under a fluorescent light. Repot in its regular mix after it has been growing for a while.
Pleioblastus variegatusPleioblastus variegatusStems light green, two to three feet (60-90cm) in height. Leaves with green and white stripes along their length. If leaves are yellowing, you're over-watering also avoid drafts. Repot every two years.
Pleioblastus veitchiiPleioblastus veitchiiStems light green, two to three feet (60-90cm) in height. Feed every three months with a water soluble fertilizer.
Showy Yellow Groove BambooShowy Yellow Groove BambooTall bamboo with green-grooved, golden-yellow canes, which can flash with shades of red in the sun, fading to darker yellow with age. This colorful variety looks great alongside the ebony-black canes of the black bamboo, Phyllostachys nigra.
Stone BambooStone BambooMedium size, about 1.5'' (4cm) in diameter and 20' (6m+) tall when growing strongly. Stems are a green-grey. Does best in bright indirect sunlight coming from the South/East/West. Feed every three months with a water soluble fertilizer.
Umbrella BambooUmbrella BambooThis medium-sized bamboo has thin, yellow-green arching canes and a mass of small, soft, mid-green leaves. Its arching habit and fairly speedy rate of growth make it an ideal choice for an informal hedge, and because it is also compact, it makes a lovely, exotic specimen or container plant for small gardens. It is also tolerant of wind and full sun.
Weeping BambooWeeping BambooMedium sized plant reaching 12' (4m) and of open growth in the tropics, smaller and more clumping in a container. Suitable for the home or a greenhouse.
