Begonias

Begonias are one of the most loved plants and they are incredibly versatile in terms of form, colour and their use in the garden. Whether you are looking for bedding plants, border plants or something for your hanging baskets or pots, Begonias make an invaluable addition to any garden. If you would like to grow these for yourself you can view our range of tubers and seeds.

How to grow

Begonias do not require special care in the garden and are very easy to grow. Ensure that you plant your Begonias as soon as you can after they are delivered and you can be certain that you will be provided with an explosion of colour come the Summer.

Position

Begonias enjoy the sun but can sometimes suffer in the full heat of a hot Summer day. Plant your Begonias in a partly shaded area which will help to reduce any stress suffered in Summer and help to keep roots moist.

Soil

Begonias should never be allowed to dry out fully and it is therefore important that they are planted in a soil that is water retentive but free draining. You can improve poor soil by incorporating plenty of well-rotted garden compost or manure and you can also add multi-purpose compost. This will not only open up the soil and improve water retention, but it will also add nutrients and help to warm soil up earlier in the year when heat will help with plant growth.

Care

Regular watering and protection from pests is essential, especially when plants are used as bedding. Feeding plants is important to ensure good growth and flowering. Applying a general fertiliser on a regular basis is advised and this can be done every 2-3 weeks in the growing season.

Top Tip

To help improve flowering ensure plants are protected from the mid day sun in summer and that they are thoroughly watered. Direct sunlight can lead plants to lose flower buds, something that is commonly known as bud drop.
