Carrots

Carrots are a versatile vegetable and very easy to grow. Roots are great pickled, boiled or grated in to salads and the leaves can be added to salads when young or cooked like spinach when mature.

How to grow

Extremely tolerant plants, Carrots can be grown in open soil, raised beds, and containers. When you receive your plugs plant in to the desired position, firm plants in well and water.

Position

Carrots, like most vegetables, appreciate a sunny site. As carrots are a fast cropping vegetable you can plant them between slower growing crops as they will not compete for light and be ready for harvest before the main crop has matured.

Soil

A fertile and moist soil, enriched with well rotted garden compost, manure or multi-purpose compost is perfect for growing Carrots.

Care

Carrots are not a demanding crop in terms of care and therefore they do not require regular feeding. A liquid seaweed feed will be beneficial for growth and can also be applied to the rest of your garden to improve overall plant health.

Harvesting

In general roots are harvested around 90 days after planting, however, this will vary between crops. Baby Carrots are standard size Carrots that are harvested early. Miniature Carrots are developed to remain small even when fully mature. Hold the leaves of the plant in one hand and lift the root with your other hand whilst using a fork. Remove the leaves after lifting the plant and do not discard as these make for good eating.

Top Tip

Avoid over watering this crop as this will lead to increased leaf growth as opposed to a swelling root.
