Cherry Tree
Cherries are a luxury fruit that have been grown for centuries and are excellent for those tricky spots in the garden. They are even quite happy growing on a north facing wall and will grow in containers. Trees produce attractive flowers, delicious fruits and what’s more is that you are likely to save a few pennies by growing your own fruit too.
How to grow
Cherry trees are rewarding fruiting plants and the trees on offer have had a great start in life making them ready to be placed in your garden where you can enjoy them fully. When you receive your plants ensure that they are watered and if you are unable to plant immediately you should place them in an appropriate space, preferably cool and out of direct sunlight.
Position
When planting your tree is important to remember two things. Cherries do not enjoy long warm summers and they do like to be kept cool. By remembering this and giving your plants the conditions they enjoy you are more likely to succeed. Plant your trees in a sheltered and sunny spot for best results.
Soil
This is the crucial point to get right when growing cherries. Cherries grow best when planted in deep, well draining and fertile soil and will not tolerate having their roots in standing water. Add plenty of organic matter to soil, well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost is fine, and an application of general fertilizer at this point will also be beneficial.
Care
Cherries will require annual pruning and to get best results it is often useful to refer to a specific fruit book which will offer several ways to grow trees. An annual mulch around the base of trees in early spring with well-rotted manure or other organic matter will benefit growth and help keep roots moist and cool.
Harvesting
Harvest cherries when plump and red in color . Pick fruits with your thumb and forefinger taking care not to bruise the soft fruit.
Top Tip
Late frosts can destroy flowers and as a result dash hopes of fruit production. Take care to protect flowers from such frosts by covering trees with horticultural fleece.
