Cherry Tree

Cherries are a luxury fruit that have been grown for centuries  and are excellent for those tricky spots in the garden. They are even quite happy growing on a north facing wall and will grow in containers. Trees produce attractive flowers, delicious fruits and what’s more is that you are likely to save a few pennies by growing your own fruit too.

How to grow

Cherry trees are rewarding fruiting plants and the trees on offer have had a great start in life making them ready to be placed in your garden where you can enjoy them fully. When you receive your plants ensure that they are watered and if you are unable to plant immediately you should place them in an appropriate space, preferably cool and out of direct sunlight.

Position

When planting your tree is important to remember two things. Cherries do not enjoy long warm summers and they do like to be kept cool.  By remembering this and giving your plants the conditions they enjoy you are more likely to succeed. Plant your trees in a sheltered and sunny spot for best results.

Soil

This is the crucial point to get right when growing cherries. Cherries grow best when planted in deep, well draining and fertile soil and will not tolerate having their roots in standing water. Add plenty of organic matter to soil, well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost is fine, and an application of general fertilizer at this point will also be beneficial.

Care

Cherries will require annual pruning and to get best results it is often useful to refer to a specific fruit book which will offer several ways to grow trees. An annual mulch around the base of trees in early spring with well-rotted manure or other organic matter will benefit growth and help keep roots moist and cool.

Harvesting

Harvest cherries when plump and red in color . Pick fruits with your thumb and forefinger taking care not to bruise the soft fruit.

Top Tip

Late frosts can destroy flowers and as a result dash hopes of fruit production. Take care to protect flowers from such frosts by covering trees with horticultural fleece.

Cherry Tree

CherryCherryThe deciduous tree is grown for its superb large, dark red acid cherries that are ideal for cooking. It has a compact but spreading habit, small white flowers in spring and bitter-sweet fruit August which are perfect for stewing. A popular, self-fertile cherry that can tolerate heavy soil. Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker.
Cherry Crown MorelloCherry Crown MorelloThe largest of the cooking cherries, with very juicy dark red fruits for cooking in pies, making jams or used to make your own wine or Cherry Brandy. The trees are self fertile and grow very well against a north facing wall or in a container on the patio, producing a bumper crop from late August onwards. Unlike traditional cherry trees the modern 'Gisela 5' rootstock has meant that varieties are these days very productive with good fruit size, but with compact growth so that it can be grown in a small space, either free standing or trained against a wall or fence or planted in containers on the patio. Cherries make an attractive tree both in flower or when laden with fruit.
Cherry Crown Morello TreeCherry Crown Morello TreeProbably the finest Morello of them all! The huge fruits can weigh up to half an ounce each and have been used to craft the fabulous Morello Chocolates seen in London's finest stores. Superb for pies and preserves. An excellent plant for a north facing wall as it thrives in shade and is very frost resistant.
Cherry Merton GloryCherry Merton GloryA delicious white cherry - actually yellow orange to look at and with white flesh - that has large juicy very tasty fruit. Unlike our other cherries this one is not self fertile and needs to be grown alongside another to achieve the best crops.Given that cherries are such a well loved fruit, it's surprising that they are not more widely grown in our gardens. Perhaps people are put off by childhood memories of giant, unmanageable trees; if so then think again! Grown on Colt rootstock, gives a very productive tree with good fruit size, but compact growth so it can be grown in a small space, either free-standing or trained against a wall or fence.
Cherry ReginaCherry ReginaSuperb late season variety - an outstanding variety bearing a heavy crop of very large dark red, high quality fruit 2-3 weeks later than Rubi. Exquisitely flavored and very juicy! Resistant to cracking, which can be a problem in cherries. Gives a very productive tree with good fruit size, but compact growth so it can be grown in a small space, either free-standing or trained against a wall or fence.
Cherry Rubi Cherry Rubi A sweet cherry that is, in our opinion, the best yet! It's self fertile and extremely productive, becoming smothered in large, deliciously sweet fruits that are ready to pick in early July. Grown on Gisela 5 rootstock gives a very productive tree with good fruit size, but compact growth so it can be grown in a small space, either free-standing or trained against a wall or fence.
Cherry StandardCherry StandardRich flowering and highly productive, this grafted specimen has many advantages, it will maintain a manageable height, it allows for ease of cropping and is perfect for the smaller garden or even a pot on the patio.
