How to grow
Dahlias
are generally easy to grow and will require little maintenance. The
plants in this selection have been expertly grown and as a result, offer
the best start possible to you and your garden. When plants are
delivered you should endeavor to plant them in to their final positions
as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately after delivery you
should keep roots moist, if pot grown, and store plants or tubers in a
cool and bright space until the can be moved outdoors.
Position
Originating
from Mexico and other parts of South America, Dahlias enjoy a spot in
full sun and they should receive as much light and shelter as possible.
Some larger flowering plants have heavy flowers on top of long stems
and will require plant supports as well as a
degree of shelter.
Soil
Dahlias will grow on most
soil, however, to get the best from your plants you should ensure soil
is well drained, fertile and moist. You can improve soil by digging it
over with a garden fork or spade, incorporating plenty of organic
matter, well-rotted garden compost, manure or multi-purpose compost will
be fine. This will help to improve soil structure, drainage and water
retention.
Care
Dahlias should be watered
regularly after planting to ensure they establish quickly but you should
be careful not to waterlog plants. Add a surface mulch of organic
matter in spring to suppress weed growth and conserve moisture. A
mid-season application of general fertilizer or liquid seaweed feed will
help to encourage strong growth and improve plant vigor. Remove faded
blooms and add to the compost bin.
Top tip
Grow
Dahlias in large containers and as spring bedding fades you can replace
it with Dahlias that are just about to bloom.
