Erigeron
Erigeron, or “Fleabane” as it is commonly known, is a native Mexican
plant that thrives in dry conditions and flowers profusely throughout
summer and autumn making it a perfect plant for growing in containers. Plants are low growing
and make for excellent border edging, gravel garden plants or for
spilling over walls. Its flowers are daisy like and come in a variety of
colors . Some plants flowers open white and turn pink later in the
season.
How
to grow
Erigeron is easy to grow as long as you provide it
with the conditions that it is accustomed to. Plants in this selection
have been expertly grown and will offer the best start possible to you
and your garden, ensuring that it looks its best in high summer/autumn.
When plants are delivered you should endeavor to plant them in to their
final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately
after delivery you should keep roots moist and store plants in a cool
and bright space until the can be moved outdoors.
Position
Erigeron
thrive in full sun and can tolerate some shade to a lesser degree. A
hardy plant that will happily self-seed, Erigerons will grow in many of
the more inhospitable and dry areas of the garden. Erigeron is also
very tolerant of coastal conditions.
Soil
Any soil
is preferable for Erigeron as long as it is free draining to dry and
fertile. To help improve your soil dig it over with a garden fork or
spade and incorporate plenty of organic matter; well-rotted garden
compost or multi-purpose compost will
be fine. This will help to improve soil structure, drainage and retain
some water necessary for growth. Drainage is absolutely key when growing
Erigeron as they will not tolerate damp soils, especially in winter.
You may wish to add horticultural grit or sand to soil to improve it
further.
Care
Although plants prefer a
well-drained soil and are relatively drought tolerant you should take
care to water plants well after planting and regularly afterwards until
established. Fertilise plants regularly in the growing season with a
good general fertilizer and an application of a liquid seaweed fertilizer
that will also help improve plant vigor. A spring mulch of compost will
help retain moisture, improve soil and suppress weeds. Cut faded
flowering stems and leaves back to ground level in spring and add to the
compost bin.
Top tip
For
a less informal look in the garden, plant Erigeron in cracks in walls
or in amongst gravel paths so as to soften hard landscaping and add
interest.
