Geraniums
Geraniums are indispensable garden plants that for many years have been a
favorite of all gardeners. They add masses of color to the
garden, be it in containers or beds, and the range of
colors is truly astounding. An excellent addition to formal and
informal gardens, the Geranium is incredibly beneficial in terms of its
adaptability and tolerant nature. If you want to encourage wildlife in
the garden then the Geranium will act as a beacon to pollinating insects
whilst looking beautiful too.
How to grow
Geraniums are
easy to grow and an excellent choice for the novice gardener or when gardening with children. By
following care instructions and providing plants with the conditions
necessary for growth you are sure to succeed. Plants have been expertly
grown and will offer the best start possible to you and your garden.
When plants are delivered you should endeavor to plant them in to their
final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately
after delivery you should keep roots moist and store plants in a cool
and bright space until the can be moved outdoors.
Position
Geraniums
enjoy positions in sun and are particularly useful in partial shade
where they will not struggle. Ideal for the front of the border, in
large drifts growing between other plants or container growing the
Geranium is an all rounder.
Soil
Geraniums will
tolerate a wide range of soils and will do very well on a deep, well
drained, fertile and moisture retentive soil. To help improve your soil
dig it over with a garden fork or spade and incorporate plenty of
organic matter; well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost will
be fine. This will help to improve soil structure, drainage and retain
some water necessary for growth.
Care
Geraniums
are undemanding plants and will grow happily with little intervention
making them a very low maintenance plant. After planting, water plants
well and maintain a regular watering regime afterwards to help plants
establish. Fertilise regularly throughout growing season with a general
fertilizer and apply a liquid seaweed fertilizer
to improve plant vigor. A spring mulch of compost will help retain
moisture, improve soil and suppress weeds.
Top tip
Divide Geraniums to make new plants. The best time to do this is when plants
begin to grow in early spring. Divide mature plants and grow them on in
modules or containers, alternatively you may choose to plant them back
in to the garden.
