Geums
The Geum is often and unfairly an overlooked plant in the garden. This cottage garden favorite is robust, generally pest free, undemanding and particularly beautiful. Geums produce flowers throughout the season in shades of yellow, orange and red above lush green rosette of foliage.

How to grow

Geums are a pleasure to grow as they are problem free and fairly low maintenance. By following care instructions and providing plants with the conditions necessary for growth you are sure to succeed. Plants in this selection have been expertly grown and will offer the best start possible to you and your garden. When plants are delivered you should endeavor to plant them in to their final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately after delivery you should keep roots moist and store plants in a cool and bright space until the can be moved outdoors.

Position

Geums perform best in a sunny position and will tolerate part shade. Ideal for the front of the border, Geums will produce masses of flowers through which you can view other plants and they are also well suited to container growing.

Soil

Geums will tolerate a wide range of soils, however, they will thrive on a deep, well drained, fertile and moisture retentive soil. To help improve your soil dig it over with a garden fork or spade and incorporate plenty of organic matter; well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost will be fine. This will help to improve soil structure, drainage and retain some water necessary for growth.

Care

Geums are renowned for their undemanding growing habit and nature. After planting, water plants well and maintain a regular watering regime afterwards to help plants establish well. Fertilise regularly throughout growing season with a general fertilizer  and apply a liquid seaweed fertilizer to improve plant vigor. A spring mulch of compost will help retain moisture, improve soil and suppress weeds.

Top tip

To promote healthy plant growth plants should be divided after 2-3 years growth and replanted in the garden.
