 Gladioli
Gladioli
have been a cottage garden favorite for many years, however, recent
developments have brought Gladioli to the modern gardener too with
exceptional new plants being produced at breakneck speed. Gladioli come
in a wide range of exciting colors , flower forms and heights so you
are sure to find something from our range that suits your garden and
taste. Gladioli also make for long lasting cut flowers and are a staple
of the cutting garden.
How to grow
Gladioli are Summer
flowering plants but unlike other plants in its category, which are
planted in the previous autumn, gladioli are planted in the spring of
the same year. When soils have warmed up you can start planting your
corms.
Position
Plant corms in a sunny position, part
shade is also acceptable, as this will help to encourage early growth.
Position your plants in the middle or front of your borders and you are
sure to provide an excellent display of color . Avoid planting in
unsheltered areas of the garden as flower spikes may be damaged or
snapped by winds.
Soil
When preparing soil it is
important to remember two essential requirements of gladioli. They are
hungry plants and they require a lot of water. By adding plenty of
well-rotted manure, garden compost or multi-purpose compost you can ensure you
provide plants with much needed nutrients and keep soil moist. If
planting on dry or poor soil you should follow the tips above and you
can also install an irrigation system to ensure plants receive
adequate moisture.
Care
Water plants regularly and feed
with a general fertilizer throughout the growing
season and after flowering. Remove faded flowers to prevent plants
producing seed which will weaken corms considerably.
Top Tip
By
planting corms deep in the ground, around 20cm, it is less likely that
you will need to stake them later in the
year.
