Hemerocallis Daylily
Daylilies, or more specifically Hemerocallis, are prolific bloomers and
as their name suggests each individual bloom lasts for a single day
after opening only to be replaced by another soon after. Daylilies come
in a range of colors and are perfectly suited to growing in beds,
borders and containers.
How to grow
Hemerocallis
are easy to grow plants and will grow in most gardens. When you receive your plants you should move
them in to their final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot
plant immediately, ensure your plants are watered and keep them moist
and in a cool and bright space until planting is possible.
Position
In
general, Hemerocallis are very tolerant plants and as such they are
adaptable to position. To get the best from your plants a position in
sun is best, as this will mean that plants have more light to aid
photosynthesis. In the garden Hemerocallis would sit front to
mid-border.
Soil
Hemerocallis will grow happily on
most soils, however, to get the best from your plants you should aim to
create moist, deeply dug and fertile soil as this will ensure plants
grow well. Soil should be prepared prior to planting, digging it over
with a garden fork or spade and adding plenty of organic matter will
suffice. The addition of well-rotted garden compost, manure and multi-purpose compost will
ensure that soil remains moist, fertility is increased and soil
structure itself improves leading to better drainage.
Care
After
planting, your Hemerocallis will require regular watering and feeding
to help them to establish well. Hemerocallis are heavy flowering plants
that put a lot of their energy in to producing beautiful blooms. To
promote future blooms and to keep plants healthy you can apply a general fertiliser or a mulch of
well rotted horse manure in the spring each year. Applying a spring
mulch will also help to conserve water and keep roots moist. Water
plants with a liquid seaweed fertiliser
throughout the season to help improve plant vigor and add nutrients.
After 2-3 years your Hemerocallis may need dividing
.
