Heuchera

The Heuchera is renowned for its colorful foliage and delightful small pink, red or white flowers. Heuchera leaves come in a massive range of colors from shocking lime green to deep crimson and can really add vibrancy and interest to the garden. Perfect for beds, borders and containers, the Heuchera is a tolerant and low maintenance plant.

How to grow

Heucheras are undemanding plants that will grow in most gardens. When you receive your plants you should move them in to their final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately, ensure your plants are watered and keep them moist and in a cool and bright space until planting is possible.

Position

Heucheras enjoy a position in part-shade and grow well in dappled in shade underneath large shrubs or trees. Heucheras will tolerate most conditions and are rarely affected by wind as they are relatively low growing plants. Heucheras make for excellent front of border plants.

Soil

Heucheras will grow happily on most soils including acid, neutral and alkaline soils. To get the best from your plants you should aim to create moist, well-drained and fertile soil as this will ensure plants grow well. Soil should be prepared prior to planting, digging it over with a garden fork or spade and adding plenty of organic matter will suffice. The addition of well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost will ensure that soil remains moist, fertility is increased and soil structure itself improves leading to better drainage.

Care

After planting your Heuchera you will need to water it well and feed it regularly to ensure it establishes well. To get the most from your plants you may choose to apply a general fertilizer or a mulch of well rotted horse manure in the spring each year. Applying a spring mulch will also help to conserve water and keep roots moist.  Water plants with a liquid seaweed fertilizer throughout the season to help improve plant vigor and add nutrients. After 2-3 years your Heuchera will need dividing to stop it getting woody.

Top tip

Coral BellsCoral BellsA great name for a plant that has incredible flower power. Masses of small pinkish-red, bell-shaped flowers crowd the tall, upright sprays in late spring and early summer. They seem to hover above the neat domes of small, highly silvered foliage that has dark green veining. Garden care: Lift and divide large clumps in early autumn and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the crown of the plant in spring.
