
Hosta
Hostas are a favorite of many gardeners and are incredibly popular
plants. They help to create immediate impact with their large
architectural foliage and tall flower spikes. Hosta leaves range from
blue to white with variegated leaves as an intermediate. These plants
add a sense of light in darker areas of the garden and look excellent
when planted in the wildlife garden.
How to grow
Hostas
are very well suited to growing in the most climates, they enjoy a cooler climate and heavy rainfall. When you
receive your plants you should move them in to their final positions as
soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately, ensure your plants
are watered and keep them moist and in a cool and bright space until
planting is possible. Using
water beads is a great way to ensure your plants get of to a great start.
Position
A
position in part shade will ensure that leaves are luscious and large,
however, many Hostas will tolerate a high degree of sun as long as soil
is moist. Hostas grow well in beds, borders and containers.
Soil
Hostas
will grow happily in most gardens as long as soil is deep, moist and
fertile. To get the best from your plants you should double dig soil
prior to planting with a garden fork or spade and add plenty of organic
matter. The addition of well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost will
ensure that soil remains moist, fertility is increased and soil
structure itself improves leading to better drainage.
Care
After
planting your will need to water plants well and feed them regularly to
ensure it establishes well. To get the most from your plants you may
choose to apply a general fertilizer or a mulch of
well rotted horse manure in the spring each year. Applying a spring
mulch will also help to conserve water and keep roots moist. Water
plants with a liquid seaweed fertilizer throughout
the season to help improve plant vigor and add nutrients to surrounding
soil.

a problem when growing Hostas and you will need to take precautions to
