Kiwi Plant
The Kiwi fruit is a beautiful and succulent fruit. Small furry fruits with succulent vivid green flesh are produced from vigorous plants that have beautiful heart shaped leaves. A climbing plant that is well suited to growing on walls, obelisks, pergolas or trellis, the Kiwi is sure to delight.

How to grow

Kiwi plants are easy to grow and vigorous plants which once planted will romp away and produce wonderful fruits. Plants have been expertly grown and only require planting following delivery. If you cannot plant your Kiwi upon arrival ensure it is adequately watered and place it in a cool and bright spot until it is ready to be moved in to its final position.

Position

Kiwi plants enjoy a sunny position and a south facing aspect is ideal but not essential. Allow plants some shelter from cold winds, erecting some temporary screening or garden fleece will suffice, and ensure there is a garden structure present for plants to climb up.

Soil

The planting area should have good fertile soil, which is well drained and full of additional organic matter. Add plenty of multi-purpose compost or well-rotted garden compost to soil to achieve this and this will help to retain moisture, warm soil and improve soil structure.

Care

Plants will require regular watering and feeding throughout the growing season. An application of general fertilizer in the spring along with a mulch of well-rotted manure will aid growth, suppress weeds and preserve moisture. A weekly liquid feed will also help aid plant growth and a liquid seaweed feed should suffice, although others can be used. Plants should be pruned regularly to restrict and contain growth.

Harvesting

Harvest fruits once plump and ripe. This can be done by hand or with the use of hand held tools. Find the finest available on our Links page.

Top Tip

Not all plants are self-fertile and you may need to grow both a male and female plant. To make things easier, you can purchase compatible plants.
Kiwi Actinidia Arguta IssaiKiwi Actinidia Arguta IssaiAn unusual variety which, unlike its more well-known cousins, boasts fruit with a smooth, edible skin! The little fruits are quite delicious and are produced in abundance - 1000 fruits per year is not unusual! Remarkably pest and disease resistant too. A hardy, easy to grow climber which will give good crops, grown on a trellis, arch or pergola in a warm spot, or on a south-facing wall. Plants are very attractive, but quite vigorous and need to be pruned to keep them in check.
Kiwi FruitKiwi FruitThis is a self-fertile variety that produces both male and female creamy-white flowers, so it does not need a pollinating partner to produce delicious, greenish-brown kiwi fruit - perfect if there is only enough space for one fruiting plant. It is a vigorous, deciduous climber, which is best suited for training as an espalier against a warm, sheltered wall in a sunny spot. Garden care: Provide good support with a network of horizontal galvanized wires spaced at 30cm intervals and using raffia or garden twine tie in the plant, first vertically up a bamboo cane and then laterally, along the wires as it grows. It produces fruit on one year old wood, so you should aim to train pairs of lateral stems to develop permanent fruiting stems. When these exceed the allotted space, pinch out the tips and train a new leading shoot. It may take 3 or 4 years to start to producing fruits.
Kiwi Hardy Kiwi Actinida ArgutaKiwi Hardy Kiwi Actinida ArgutaDelicious eaten whole and don’t need to be peeled! Generally sweeter than regular varieties, green with very thin 'fuzzless' skin and are the size of grapes. Plants prefer a sunny spot where they can climb along a trellis or cover a pergola.
Kiwi Hayward & TomouriKiwi Hayward & TomouriHayward is one of the best traditional varieties grown, because it flowers later in the season and produces a heavy crop of large fruits with superb flavor. Hayward is a self sterile female plant so it must be planted next to a male plant to provide pollen in order to produce fruit. We recommend planting Kiwi Tomouri as a male plant as this will only produce flowers and aid pollination. Plants can grow up to 9m (30ft) tall.
Kiwi JennyKiwi JennyJenny is the only self-fertile variety in cultivation. Vigorous, hardy plants produce large attractive red-tipped early growth and a heavy crop of small (walnut sized) very sweet fruits in late summer. Ideal if you only have space for one of these spectacular climbers in your fruit garden. Plants can grow up to 3.6m (12 feet) tall.
Kiwi SoloKiwi SoloAt last! A self-fertile Kiwi that reliably yields a good crop of quality fruit.Whilst individual fruits are not quite as big as those produced on a female plant as it is not dependent on the pollen from a nearby male plant you will actually be able to enjoy lots more of them. A vigorous climbing plant best grown against a south or west-facing wall or grow in a sheltered position up a trellis or over a pergola.
