 Lily Bulbs
Lilies have grown in popularity over the years and are now one of
the most popular flowering plants. It is easy to understand
why this is as Lilies are not only excellent as cut flowers and garden
plants but they are also heavily scented and varied in terms of color,
height and flower size. Lilies can be planted in containers, flowerbeds and borders.
How
to grow
Lilies are very easy to grow plants and do
especially well in containers. You can plant your
lilies throughout Autumn, although you can also plant lilies in spring
time, and they will flower in the following Summer.
Position
Lilies
enjoy a position in full sun and they will thrive in these conditions.
Some of the taller growing plants may not appreciate an open site,
which may be hit by strong winds, as stems and flowers may be damaged.
You can stake flowers to strengthen
stems and reduce the likelihood of this occurring or provide plants with
a screen or position near to a hedge.
Soil
Lilies
appreciate a free draining soil and as such do not appreciate wet and
waterlogged conditions. When planting add a layer of drainage below
bulbs, horticultural grit is sufficient. Cover bulbs with a soil that
has been improved with organic matter, such as well-rotted garden
compost or multi-purpose compost. Additional
horticultural grit or sand can also be added to this mix to improve
drainage. If soil is particularly heavy consider growing plants in
containers and place these in to beds.
Care
Lilies
require watering in warmer months and feeding with a balanced fertilizer. Fertilize plants when
planting and subsequently throughout the growing season. Once flowers
have faded you should remove the blooms to stop plants from putting
their energy in to producing seed. This will weaken plants and affect
their ability to flower the next year.
Top Tip
Keep a
watchful eye for red lily beetle, which is a common pest of all Lilies.
These beetles are easily identified by their bright red bodies and if
you discover these pests you should remove them immediately as they are
likely to damage leaves.
