Muscari
Muscari, otherwise known as the grape hyacinth, is a beautiful little
bulb with a delicate scent. The Muscari selection provides a range of
bulbs in colors ranging from white, powder blue and sapphire. A quick
to establish Spring flowering bulb, Muscari is a welcome addition to any
garden and a favorite of bees that require nectar early on in the
season. Grown in beds, borders, containers and window boxes, Muscari is a versatile
plant that will inhabit a number of positions within the garden.
How
to grow
Muscari are very low maintenance plants and will
thrive on neglect. If you are new to gardening or just testing out your
horticultural capabilities then these plants are excellent beginner
plants. On the other hand if you require low maintenance plants that
will flower reliably each year they will also delight.
Position
Position
Muscari in full sun to get the best from your bulbs. When planted in
shady spots leaf growth is produced at the expense of potential flowers.
A mass of strappy leaves will result and flower production will be
minimal. Muscari are well suited to growing in containers and in dry
areas under trees or near walls. A perfect plant for those difficult
areas.
Soil
Soil should be well drained with average
fertility to produce the best from Muscari bulbs. Add plenty of organic
matter, such as well-rotted garden compost and multi-purpose compost to the intended area
which will help improve drainage and retain an adequate moisture level
for plants. Refrain from adding any nutrient rich material, such as
manure, as this is likely to produce leafy growth as opposed to flowers.
Care
As
strong growing plants that thrive on neglect, Muscari require almost no
care at all. Fertiliser should be applied
sparingly as this will only promote leaf growth and watering is rarely
required. Every two to three years you should divide plant clumps to
help reduce congestion and improve plant health. Not only will this
help to improve the flowering ability of your plants it will also enable
you to propagate more plants and add them to other areas of the garden.

Tip
Add Muscari bulbs to a seasonal display of Spring flowers
by creating a bulb container. Include layers of crocus, daffodils and
tulips in a small container to provide a succession of color and
interest early on in the season.
