Other Flowering Annuals

Annuals are used to create unique bedding displays, fill gaps in borders and trail in pots and hanging baskets. They add color, scent and structure to the garden and act as an accent to more permanent planting. If you would like to grow annuals from seed please see our full seed collection.

How to grow

Annuals are generally easy to grow and as long as you follow a few simple rules when caring for your plants you are certain to create a beautiful display with a mass of blooms. When you receive your plants you should plant them as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately you should water plants thoroughly and keep them in a cool but sunny spot until they can be moved in to their final positions.

Position

Most annuals enjoy a sunny site which is sheltered from the mid-day sun and harsh winds. An ideal position for plants would be part shade, although this depends on the exact plant you are growing.

Soil

Soil should be free draining but moisture retentive. This will ensure that plants have enough water without being waterlogged. By incorporating plenty of organic matter in to your soil you can achieve these results. Well-rotted garden compost or horse manure is ideal and you can also use multi-purpose compost.

Care

Regular watering is essential to keep plants healthy and flowering. You may want to consider adding an irrigation system to keep plants watered. A regular fertiliser should be applied to improve plant health and promote flowering. A regular application of general fertiliser will be sufficient.

Top Tip

If you are growing plants in containers you should add Water Beads to compost so that plants do not dry out. This will prolong the life of flowers and help to produce a spectacular display.
