Pelargoniums
Pelargoniums are fantastic plants and are a true spectacle when planted
en mass in bedding schemes or in smaller numbers in pots, hanging baskets and window boxes. Foliage and flowers
are both attractive and our range has a good variety of different plants
to suit most tastes. Our
seed range also has a good range of Pelargonium
seeds if you want to grow these plants for yourself.
How to grow
Pelargoniums
are tender plants and as a result you should wait until all risk of
frost has passed before planting out or plant up in a frost-free place
such as an unheated greenhouse. Once all risk of frost
has passed these plants will require no special treatment and will enjoy
the British weather.
Position
Position your
plants in to their final position as soon as possible after receiving
your order. Pelargoniums are from warmer climbs and as a result they
enjoy to be planted in an area that will receive plenty of light. Ensure
plants do not dry out and allow some shelter from wind which may damage
plants and flowers.
Soil
When planting your
Pelargoniums it is always best to improve the surrounding soil as plants
that inhabited the space previously would have used up a lot of the
available nutrients. Improving soil will also help to improve drainage
and enable soil to warm in the sun, which will help to improve root
growth. A good loam based or multi-purpose compost will be sufficient
for these plants.
Care
When first planting your
new plants and thereafter it is essential that you water them well and
keep a watchful eye out for pests and diseases. Initially plants
will not require any fertilizer although the use of a
well-balanced fertilizer when planting will get plants off to a good
start. When flower buds start to appear you should apply a high
potassium tomato feed to encourage further
blooms.
Top Tip
If you are planting your
Pelargoniums in containers, such as pots or hanging baskets, you can
incorporate
Water Beads to conserve
water. This will enable you to water less and also help the
environment.
