 Peony
Peonies produce beautiful blooms which are unrivaled by most other
plants and make an unmistakable impact in most gardens. Peonies are
fully hardy, long lived and resilient plants which revel in the British
climate. Flowering in shades from white to darkest purple the Peony
remains ever popular and produces masses of large blooms. Plants are
suitable for beds, borders and container growing.
How to grow
Peonies
are often perceived as difficult customers, however, given the correct
growing conditions and a little knowledge they will establish themselves
quickly, making them tolerant of changing conditions. When you receive your plants you should move them in to their
final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot plant immediately,
ensure your plants are watered and keep them moist and in a cool and
bright space until planting is possible.
Position
Peonies
enjoy a sunny position in the garden and due to their large flowering
habit they may require a degree of shelter, which can be achieved with
the use of garden screening or hedging. Taller growing
plants or those grown in containers may require plant supports to keep them
in shape and stop them from snapping in the wind.
Soil
Soil
should be deep, well-drained, fertile and moist. It is essential that
the planting area is not susceptible to water logging as this is likely
to inhibit growth significantly. Prepare your planting site in advance
of planting by enriching the intended area with plenty of organic
matter, well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost will
be fine.
Care
Water your new plants well after
planting to ensure they establish well and get the best start possible.
Plants should be planted so that the tuberous roots are around 2” below
the soil surface and if planting pot grown plants you can plant to the
soil level of the pot. Plants will benefit from regular applications of
fertilizer at intervals
throughout the growing season and you may also wish to add a mulch of
well-rotted garden compost, manure or multi-purpose compost in the
spring each year as this will help to encourage good growth, conserve
water and keep roots moist throughout summer. Remove fading flowers by
hand or with Ratcheting Pruners to encourage new
blooms and add your clippings to the compost bin.
Top Tip
Peonies
can be susceptible to Peony wilt, which is usually prevail in wet
summers. If this does occur remove wilted foliage and destroy it.
Plants usually recover in the following year. More information on
plant problems and other information can be found in books.

 Peony
Paeonia Eden's Perfume Said to be the most fragrant peony ever! - Large pink, layered blooms with the strongest, rose-like fragrance ever known in Peonies with robust growth and strong stems. Perfect cut flower as well as a great border plant.
|
Peony Prized for their blowsy, glamorous blooms and glossy, deeply cut foliage, peonies are held in deep affection by many gardeners, despite their short flowering season and vulnerability to peony wilt in damp weather. It's easy to see why. From the promise of early spring, when their red, mottled shoots push through bare earth and the handsome foliage unfurls, to early summer, when the huge flowers burst open from spherical red buds, peonies exert a fascination that few can resist. 'Claire de Lune' is a variety, with stunning, large, single, fragrant, pale lemon-yellow flowers with deeper yellow, fluffy centres from late spring to early summer. It flowers best in full sun. Fill the bare ground around the Peony with spring bulbs to prolong the season of interest.
Garden care: Deadhead after flowering. In early spring apply a top-dressing of a balanced slow release fertilizer around the base of the plant and mulch well with well rotted garden compost or manure. If the plant shows signs of collapse or the leaves become spotty, this may be a symptom of Peony botrytis. Remove affected leaves immediately. In autumn, cut off all foliage and dispose of it to prevent reinfection the following spring.
