Red Hot Pokers, Kniphofia
Kniphofia, often referred to as red hot pokers or torch lilies, add
heat and light to the garden and are very much at home in the herbaceous
or mixed border. These South African plants produce beautiful candle
like flowers above a Rosette of architectural foliage and come in a
range of sizes and colors. Despite their origins Kniphofia are hardy
perennials that grow well in British gardens. If you would like to grow
plants from seed please view the

How
to grow
Kniphofia are very easy to grow plants as long
as they have plenty of water in the growing season and remain as dry as
possible throughout winter. When you receive your
plants you should move them in to their final positions as soon as
possible. If you cannot plant immediately, ensure your plants are
watered and keep them moist and in a cool and bright space until
planting is possible.
Position
Kniphofia
will grow in a variety of positions and do best in full sun. Plants
vary in height and spread depending on which plant you choose to grow
and most make for excellent front to mid border plants. Plants will
produce tall flower stems however it is unlikely that they will require plant supports.
Soil
Kniphofia
will grow well in most soils and do best when soil is deep, fertile and
moist. You can improve heavy soil by incorporating plenty of organic
matter, such as well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost. You
may also wish to add horticultural grit to improve drainage further as
plants will not enjoy winter wet. An application of general fertilizer or liquid seaweed feed during
the growing season and after flowering will help to promote strong and
healthy plant growth.
Care
Water
your new plants well after planting to help them establish well. Plants
will benefit from regular watering for the first few weeks in site and you
may also wish to add a mulch of well-rotted garden compost or
multi-purpose compost in the spring each year as this will help to
encourage good growth, conserve water and keep roots moist throughout
summer. Remove fading flowers by hand or with
Ratcheting Pruners and add them to the compost bin.
Top Tip
Plant
your Kniphofias in drifts, with grasses and other plants with red and
orange flowers, for added impact.
