Sanguisorba
Sanguisorba, or Burnet, makes for a great addition to any garden and has
a particularly nice growing habit. Plants produce fantastic flowers on
wiry stems which make them ideal for planting in large drifts in
herbaceous borders. Flowers differ in that some species produce large
fluffy catkin types while others, bred from our native Sanguisorba, will
produce tight cone like flowers in shade of wine-red.
How to grow
Easy
to grow, Sanguisorbas will require little care post planting and once
established they will become fairly low maintenance and drought tolerant. When you receive your plants you should move
them in to their final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot
plant immediately, ensure your plants are watered and keep them moist
and in a cool and bright space until planting is possible.
Position
A
position in full or part sun is best for Sanguisorbas with white
flowering plants preferring more shade. Due to the prolific flowering
nature of these plants it is possible to plant them in large drifts
through borders and plants will require little support if any.
Soil
Plants
will grow in most soils but to encourage a better display it is best to
create a soil that is fertile, well-drained and moist. Heavy soils can
be improved with the addition of organic matter, such as well-rotted
garden compost or multi-purpose compost and an
application of general fertilizer or liquid seaweed feed during
the growing season and after flowering will help to promote strong and
healthy plant growth.
Care
Water plants well
after planting to help them establish and develop a good root system.
Plants will benefit from regular watering and irrigation systems will make this
process easier. In spring you may wish to add a mulch of well-rotted
garden compost or multi-purpose compost as this will help to encourage
good growth, conserve water and keep roots moist throughout summer. Once established these plants will tolerate periods of drought. Remove
fading flowers by hand or with
Ratcheting Pruners and add them to the compost bin. Plants are fairly
disease and pest free and no precautions are necessary.
Top Tip
If
you intend to grow different types of Sanguisorba together you may find
that plants produce seed that is not true to its parent due to
interbreeding. Plants are best propagated by division in the Autumn.
