Snowdrops

Perhaps the first noteworthy bulb to rear its head late winter is the Snowdrop. Often planted in drifts to great effect but equally admired in a garden pot for close appreciation of their scent and beauty. Snowdrops are very hardy and can flower from early January through to March. Snowdrops, otherwise known as 'Galanthus' thrive in woodland and are often planted in the shade of trees to good effect.

In the right conditions they will multiply and can be split every three years or so. If feeding snowdrops then a leaf mulch is as good a fertiliser as any.

Common SnowdropCommon SnowdropIt's hard not to love these wonderful bulbs for adding color to the garden when little else is awake. The nodding white flowers have a small green marking on the inside of each petal, are honey scented, and appear in late winter. They look particularly good planted in large drifts in grass where they will naturalize quite happily. Alternatively plant them up in clumps in the front of mixed borders, or into pots so they can be admired close up.
Double SnowdropDouble SnowdropDainty, double, pure white, pear-shaped flowers with green-tipped inner petals in January and February and narrow, grey-green leaves. These delightful double snowdrops are ideal for naturalizing in the border under deciduous trees and shrubs. Plant the pots as soon as possible after purchase in well-drained, moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil.
Single SnowdropsSingle SnowdropsThese single Snowdrops bulbs are a lovely addition to your garden producing crisp white flowers and bright green foliage. Snowdrops are charming whether planted in clumps in borders and rockeries under shrubs and trees in window boxes and containers.
SnowdropSnowdropA taller variety with a distinctive, long spathe which looks like the flowers have a hood. This is a good choice for those looking for a slightly more unusual snowdrop, or those wanting to add to their collection as it is still quite rare. Both the inner and outer petals are white, but have green markings which make them look as if they have been painted with a brush.
Snowdrop & EranthisSnowdrop & EranthisIt's a sure sign that spring is on its way when these dainty little beauties appear. Ideal for naturalizing, and also for cutting. Height 10cm. Size 5/6cm. (Bulb sizes quoted in centimeters refer to the circumference of bulbs.) Flowering: February-March.
Snowdrop Double FloweredSnowdrop Double FloweredThere's nothing more pleasurable than walking through woodland sprinkled with vibrant color from the first flowers of a new year Snowdrops and Aconites are charming when planted in clumps in the border and rockeries, under shrubs and trees, as part of mixed planting schemes in window boxes and containers, or naturalized in grass Bulbs are cultivated and not taken from the wild.
