Tobacco Plants

Tobacco plants (Nocotiana) make excellent additions to bedding schemes, borders and containers. These fantastic annual plants add colour, height and, best of all, scent to the garden. How to grow

Tobacco plants are annuals that do not require a lot of care and as the growing process has already begun all that is left to do is select a space to plant your tobacco plants and then keep up with regular watering a feeding to ensure you reap the full benefits of what these plants can offer. If you cannot plant immediately after delivery, ensure plants are watered and stored in a cool bright room or greenhouse until placing in to their final positions.

Position

Nicotiana can tolerate being planted in sun or part shade. For best results select a spot that has some shelter from the mid-day sun which may cause plants to wilt and suffer stress in summer.

Soil

Soil should be free draining and water retentive, although plants may tolerate a variety of soils. Incorporate plenty of organic matter prior to planting, such as well rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost, as this will improve soil structure, drainage and keep soil moist.

Care

Water regularly as plants can lose a lot of moisture during hot weather. We have a host of watering solutions on offer, which may be beneficial, such as an irrigation system or water butt, which will also help to conserve rain water. A regular application of well balanced fertilizer will promote healthy growth and flowering.

Top Tip

Position plants near to doorways, paths and windows to take full advantage of their wonderful evening scent.

Nicotiana Eau De Cologne

Nicotiana Eau de Cologne are uniform mid-height plants which are striking to view and bold in color. This plant is commonly known as the Tobacco plant. Potting on is recommended to ensure strong plants and these up-facing blooms are guaranteed.

Tobacco Plant

Often grown as a perennial in warmer climates, it should be treated as an annual to add oomph to your summer bedding display. The small flowers appear in early summer a creamy white and gradually fade to pink and darken as they mature to a deeper rose. As you will usually have young and old flowers on the plant at the same time it creates a glorious, multi-colored effect.

Tobacco Plant Avalon Lime And Purple Bicolor

Uniquely colored, large, lime and purple bicolored flowers on dwarf, compact plants. Well branched and bushy, these gems lend themselves extremely well to container growing. Height: 20-30cm

Tobacco Plant Havana Series

All the beauty of the floriferous and well known tobacco-plant on DWARF plants! Practical in habit and appearance, they are well branched, bushy, and covered in five-petalled flowers of either white, apple blossom, lime-rose, carmine-rose, red or purple. Tobacco Plant Lime Green

Prolific flowering, weatherproof variety with lime sherbet blooms ideal for floral decor and border. An unusual color particularly sought after for flower arrangements.

Tobacco Plant Marshmallow

Reintroduced following increasing interest by garden designers and visitors to our Open Days. Nicotiana Marshmallow is a very unusual and visually stunning variety which will add stature and fragrance to your summer borders. The masses of wiry stems are covered with a 'haze' of small blooms, each one fading through red, pink and white to give the effect of three flower colors on each plant.

Tobacco Plant Nicotiana Sylvestris

This imposing half hardy annual has stout spikes bearing a cascading head of fragrant 3½in long white blooms. It grows to a height of 90-120cm (36-48in) making it an excellent subject for the border. Occasionally a short lived perennial in a warm sheltered site.

Tobacco Plant Perfume Deep Purple

This fashionable deep-purple color adds a touch of class to summer displays when planted en-mass in borders. Ideal for container plantings, as well as filling the evening air with its delicate perfume.

Tobacco Plant Sensation Mixed

A showy and compact variety with sweetly scented flowers which stay open all day in a brilliant range of colors. Recommended. Flowers summer to autumn. Height 60-90cm (24-36in).

Tobacco Plant Tinkerbell

A Breeding Breakthrough in Nicotiana Tinkerbell demands closer inspection, as the clusters of dusky-rose petals have lime-green backs and unusual azure blue pollen in the center of each flower. Ideal for adding height and interest to borders, flowering over a very long period.
