How to grow

Buying plug plants means that the first part of the growing is done for you.  All you need to do now is decide where you are going to plant your tomatoes.  Take care to plant your plugs after the last frost.

Position

Originating from South America these plants are true sun lovers.  It is really important that tomatoes receive as much sun as possible and if you are growing them outside of the greenhouse you should take steps to plant them up against a wall or in a sheltered area.

Soil

Tomatoes require a moisture retentive but free draining soil.  The best way to improve soil quality and water retention is to add plenty of multi-purpose compost.  This will not only hold water, but it will also help to warm the soil which your tomatoes will benefit from.

Care

Tomatoes require regular watering and feeding.  If you are growing your plants in the greenhouse it is important that you monitor moisture levels regularly as plants can dry out quickly, this is also very true of plants grown outdoors during hot summer months.  Daily watering and a regular application of a general fertilizer will ensure good plant growth.  When plants begin to flower you can also start to feed plants with a potassium rich tomato fertilizer to encourage plants to fruit.

Harvesting

Harvest tomatoes when fruits have ripened by simply picking them from the vine.  Tomatoes are best eaten shortly after picking.

Top Tip

Support plants by tying them to strong plant stakes. Change stakes as plants grow to ensure they will not be damaged by the wind or increasing weight of the fruit being produced.
