Vinca
Vinca, commonly called Periwinkle, is an invaluable plant that makes for
an excellent groundcover plant in any garden situation. Typically
leaves are green and glossy but there are variegated specimens
available too. Flowers come in shades of purple to white and these can
be seen throughout the summer. If you enjoy growing plants from seed

How to grow
Vincas are easy to grow plants
that are truly low maintenance and are a good choice if new to
gardening. When you receive your plants you should move
them in to their final positions as soon as possible. If you cannot
plant immediately, ensure your plants are watered and keep them moist
and in a cool and bright space until planting is possible.
Position
Vincas
will grow in many positions including sun and shadier areas. Planted
underneath trees or shrubs, Vinca will help to suppress weeds and cover
the area.
Soil
Vinca will grow well on most
soils and thrive even when neglected. To ensure growth is strong it is
advised that plants are planted in a soil that is fertile, well-drained
and moist. You can improve all soils with the addition of organic
matter, such as well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose compost and an application
of general fertilizer or liquid seaweed feed during
the growing season and after flowering will help to promote strong and
healthy plant growth.
Care
Vincas will require
little care once established however, you should water plants well after
initial planting and ensure they do not dry out completely. In spring
you can add a mulch of well-rotted garden compost or multi-purpose
compost, which will help aid growth, conserve water and keep roots moist
throughout summer. Remove fading flowers and dead foliage by hand or
with
Ratchetng Pruners and add them to the compost
bin.
Top Tip
Plant Vincas in problem spots in
the garden, such as dry shade or under trees. Other plants would
typically struggle here however, Vinca will relish it.
